Costa Rica Chapter 1: La Fortuna!

If you follow along with me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have seen a few sneak peeks of my recent trip to Costa Rica!  I had the awesome opportunity to take some much needed time off and travel around this gorgeous country with my husband Nick!  I can’t say enough how lucky I think we are that we were able to do this.  I don’t want to take anything in life for granted, especially these golden nuggets of time to get away and explore God’s beautiful landscapes across the globe.  Traveling is something that I love to do, even though initially I do get a little homesick to be honest!  There’s always a slight adjustment period for me, but all that unease floats away once I’m in the heart of the country.

Upon arrival to San Jose, Costa Rica, we stayed at a quaint bed and breakfast that served as a perfect resting place as we collected ourselves from the long overnight flight.  Besides our generous host Manuel, my favorite part of this place was having Lola, the yellow-naped Amazon parrot around!  She was so pretty and talkative, but she only spoke Spanish…go figure! We only stayed one night here and the next morning were off to a spot called La Fortuna, just outside the famous Arenal Volcano National Park.  Despite the heavy rain, we toughed it out and went to explore the park the next day. Lucky for us, we didn’t have any rain on our hike and oh my goodness, was it intriguing.  The forest below the volcano is captivating. We walked briskly through at first to get to the best viewpoint, but on our way back, we took it slow. We wanted to take in as much of the flora, fauna and animals that we could.  The noises of the birds, the bugs and just the wind were something right out of a Brookstone sound machine!  It was an experience to be remembered for sure.

The next day  we went exploring another part of the city, down to the beautiful La Fortuna Waterfall!  We descended about 500 steps (by stairs) down into this serene river with the steady gush of the waterfall before us.  It was a good spot to take a dip on a hot day, but I accidentally left my bathing suit back at our place so we waded in the water instead and of course took some pictures.  It was another chance to just breathe and take it all in.  Amazing to think what God created for his children.  And that was just the beginning!  Next I’ll show you more of our adventures when we continued on to Los Tornos and Monteverde!  Follow my blog to get the next post in your mailbox 😀

Here’s a look at the neighborhood we stayed in through Air BnB.  Despite the clouds, we could still get a solid view of the volcano!

Below is a traditional Costa Rican dish called a Casado which normally includes rice, beans, salad, fried plantains and a meat.  Lots of a food for a great price at one of the local “sodas”!
